Learn to Sew: Workshop

Learn to Sew: Workshop

Regular price $160.00 Sale

Join us in a fun evening as Amanda teaches you to sew your own Kabuki Tee.

This workshop is perfect if you’re keen to learn how to follow a pattern to sew your own clothes at home. The fabric will be pre-cut in your chosen colour and size and ready for you to sew together on the night so we can get straight on the machines.

The Kabuki Tee is a Paper Theory pattern for “advanced beginners”. During the workshop I will take you through, step by step, how to put this pattern together, following along with the Paper Theory instructions. Once this workshop is completed you should be able to follow along with other patterns and start building your #memade wardrobe, not to mention that you will have your own digital copy of the Kabuki Tee pattern and a printed pattern in your size to take home so you can sew more.

Be sure to let me know your colour, binding colour and size selections when you check out, see the details tab for where you can find the options.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me and I will answer them as soon as I can.

About Amanda

I’m the person behind all that is KoiNo.

I have been sewing for over 25 years. I started sewing on mum’s old Bernina machine before getting my own machine (a toy machine that actually stitched) for my 9th Birthday (I don’t know if I could be trusted on the full sized machine just yet). I started by sewing clothes and accessories for my dolls then started making my own clothes (on a proper machine) as a teenager, and after getting 94% for School Cert textiles and sewing I decided to follow my passion to make a career out of it. I acquired a Bachelor of Design at Massey University before working in the industry for the past 13 years, both in garment production (for a small label in Wellington and KoiNo itself) and education (teaching at Wintec here in Hamilton).

Answers to questions that haven’t been asked yet but probably would be (FAQs)

What if I come and can’t get the hang of it/find out sewing isn’t for me and don’t finish my top?

I will aim to get you through the project by taking you step by step through the process. However, if, at the end of the workshop you have not finished your top, or are not confident enough to finish it off yourself at home, leave it with me and I’ll finish it for you, so you’ll definitely come out of the workshop with a beautiful linen top to wear.

Can I bring my own fabric or choose a different fabric for the project?

No. The linen from the Fabric Store is a premium product that works well for the pattern we are sewing and sews together well on most machines. You will however be given your own copy of the pattern and are welcome to make another project at home after attending the workshop.

Can I just buy this top from KoiNo or can I sell this design?

No. This top a ã Paper Theory Pattern and is not a KoiNo design to sell. Likewise, you will not be able to sell any projects made using this pattern. I have permission from Tara of Paper Theory to teach a workshop using her design and each workshop attendee will be given their own copy of the pattern that has been purchased specifically for them from Paper Theory, read more about using these patterns here.

Can I buy access to the workshop for a friend?

Absolutely. Fabric, size and binding choices need to be made by November 19th.

Do I need to know how to sew at all?

This is a beginner’s workshop for sewing and following a pattern. Some knowledge of your sewing machine is preferable, give sewing in a straight line a go for example (even through paper for now). If you want to bring your machine into the store before the workshop at some point I’d be happy to test it out for you and give you a rundown of the basics, and even some fabric off cuts to test sew on.

Do I need to buy the pattern first?

No, everyone who takes the workshop will get their own copy of the pattern, this has been purchased for you.

Do I need to purchase the fabric myself?

No, the fabric will be purchased for you and cut out into the Kabuki Tee pattern in your size ready to sew.

Can I see more images of the finished top?

Yes, check out the pattern listing on The Paper Theory website here.

Or, you can check out the hashtag #kabukitee on Instagram here to see others who have made the top.
